Mr. Hamburger was born in Israel in 1946. He is married, father of five and grandfather of 16. Mr. Hamburger holds a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
In 1971, Mr. Hamburger joined the family business Hamishmar Insurance Agency, which was founded in 1935. In 1975, Mr. Hamburger established the Harel Insurance Company Ltd. When first established, the Company was engaged solely in the sale of life insurance and was ranked as Israel’s 29th largest insurance company. In 1980, the Company began selling general insurance.
In 1982, Harel Insurance Investments & Financial Services Ltd. was established and absorbed Harel Insurance Company Ltd., as well as Hamishmar Insurance Agency. Immediately upon its establishment, Harel Investments issued 25% of its shares and became a public company whose shares are traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange (TASE).
In subsequent years, Harel Investments acquired the insurance companies "Shiloach", "Sahar", "Zion" and "Dikla", which were merged later into a single company – Harel Insurance Company Ltd.
From 1975 to 1999, Mr. Hamburger served as CEO of Harel Insurance Company Ltd. and has been serving as Chairman of Harel Insurance Investments & Financial Services Ltd. from its establishment in 1982 to the present day. Mr. Hamburger also serves as Chairman of the Board, as a member of the board in Harel Investments group subsidiaries, and as a member of the Advisory Committee of the National Economic Council.
Mr. Hamburger previously served for four years as chairman of the Association of Life Insurance Companies Ltd. and for 15 years as a member of the board of directors of the Association.In December 2016 he was appointed as Chairman of the Association of Insurance Companies (R.A) and as chairman of the Association of Life Insurance Companies Ltd.
Mr. Hamburger is a member of various non-profit organizations and associations in the fields of community welfare and the arts. In the past eight years, he served as chairman of Maccabi World Union, and upon the termination of his office some months ago, he was awarded the title of Honorary President of the Maccabi World Union.
